Burgundy Wool Wrap Skirt - Simplicity 7015

I couldn't be happier with this skirt remake. My wrap skirt was nice but it did nothing for my rectangular shape.... except exaggerate it. By remaking it into a pencil skirt, especially this pencil skirt, I also remade my figure... into one with curves. Yeah!!!

As you can see, that wrap skirt really had nothing but the fabric going for it... so I took that quality and put it to good use. I love this fabric. It's an amazingly buttery tropical weight wool in a rich burgundy. How fun is that?

I used my new favorite skirt pattern, Butterick B5917 Ruffle Dress. Lol, I know, it's a dress... but no one said that you couldn't omit the top portion and just finish the waistline with a nice facing. In fact that is just what I did with this pattern last month, in making my black linen skirt. For that one I used the skirt pattern all the way to the top, just under the bust.

This time, I chopped it off just below the waistline and added a band with an overlap and hook and eye closure. I kept the zipper at center back along with the hemline slit. I did add 2 inches to the hem length because I like a nice deep, hand-stitched hem. Yes, I stitched the hem... as usual. I just can't help it... I had to get my "hand stitched" fix. :)

I have to say that this is the easiest skirt pattern ever. I even kept the front darts, which I don't usually do. I'm not sure if I really like those. If/when I make this up again as a regular skirt, I'll omit them and see if I like that better.

So, what do you think? Is this an improvement?

  1. What a lovely skirt - as you say, much more flattering. I'm a rectangle as well - our challenge is creating the illusion of curves, which you have done well.

    1. Thanks so much Lysette. Yep, I have a very low waist to hip difference. Naturally, I have no curves, lol, so I have to "make" them. :)

  3. great job - I am always hate working on clothing. I get all excited and make the garment - only to not fit me like I think it should. I think it is a combination of my weird body and poor sewing! ANYWAY - your skirt look great!

    1. Oh Shelly, do keep trying with garment sewing. It can be very rewarding. Unfortunately modern patterns are not always easy to work with. Thanks so much for your encouraging compliments. :)
