Silk Tweed Skirt ~ March Makes

Binge sewing either ends in great accomplishment or great frustration. In this case my efforts were blessed with the former. And what a relief that is.

Is it wrong to get up extra early, on your day off, to get some sewing done? I hope not. I went to bed last night determined to make headway on my Easter skirt. My alarm went off at 5:30 and by 7am I was focused on my task. I had debated getting right on it but was sidetracked with pesky things like the snooze button and breakfast. Nothing like a hot shower to make you want to crawl back into a warm bed on a cold winter morning..... but I digress.

Let's get into sewing chat, shall we?

Honestly, you have to be bored of me using this pattern for all of my skirts and dresses!! I did make a slight change to make it a bit more interesting.

I started with the skirt portion of Butterick B5917 (Size 14), and added the back ruffle detail from Simplicity 1919. It's not much, I know, but I wanted to do something different with it. I have so many skirts now, cut in the same silhouette.

I didn't trust the tweed to stay put so I opted to try a bound seam with Hong Kong finishing. Truth be told, I cut the fabric and inserted the zipper 4 days ago and finished the seam allowance on it yesterday. Who knows how long it would take me if I only finished one step every few days!!

My first try at Hong Kong finishing

So today I knocked it out of the park. Even with making my binding tape and hand stitching the Hong Kong finish, I had all of the main seams done by lunch.

I hope your sewing adventures are going smashingly.
Until next time,
Happy Stitching!!

  1. What a beautiful skirt! I love it on you. The fit is great and I love tweeds.
I love binge sewing too. I had that in February when I entered the Wardrobe Sudoku Contest on PatternReview.com. I just planned everything out 1 day and then sewed and sewed and sewed any 30 minutes I get throughout the day. It was almost like a drug! :-)
